Lagos
State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Tuesday said no fewer than 1,200
houses would be built in Eko Atlantic City to reduce the housing deficit
in the state.
Fashola, who received a French
delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Trade, Nrs. Nicole Bricq, at
the Lagos House, Marina, said the reclaiming of the 10, 000, 000 square
meters, meant for the Eko Atlantic City from the ocean, was a battle
between man and nature.
He said, “A new city will emerge from
the reclaimed portion of land. And we expect that not less than 1, 200
high-rise buildings will spring up there. That is the future that we
seek for Lagos State. It will be a place that will be bustling with
activities.”
“The protection work has not reached its
preferred destination. As we progress, we will protect our shoreline.
We have seen a clear evidence of the success of technology where it has
been restored.”
Fashola added that the government had
commenced the payment of compensation to the owners of the land acquired
for the construction of the 16, 000 hectare Lekki Free Trade Zone
project.
Earlier, Bricq had said the visit was
to strengthen the level of bilateral trade and agreement between her
country and the Lagos State Government.
Bricq said the French Government had discovered that Lagos was important to the country’s developmental agenda.
