Jealous ex-girlfriend sets rival ablaze in Enugu

According to a report by Sunnewsonline.com, a 20 year old girl allegedly set ablaze the 22 year old new love interest of her ex-boyfriend. Cynthia Onah reportedly went to her ex-boyfriend's house at Onugba Nike area in Enugu State late at night with a gallon of fuel and emptied its content on Chinwe Igwe, her ex's girlfriend, who was sleeping. The incident took place on August 24th.
The Commissioner of Police Enugu State, Mr. Mohammed Adamu described the incident as very unfortunate. "It is terrible that a girl because of jealousy would set another girl on fire simply because they are befriending the same boy."
CP Adamu explained that on that fateful day, Cynthia had in connivance with another suspect, one Obiora Chukwuegbo stormed Chika's home and set Chinwe on fire. It was only the assistance of neighbours that Chinwe was rescued through the window as the fire consumed the room. She was said to have been taken to a private hospital before she was transferred to Annunciation Specialist Hospital Emene, Enugu State where she is still receiving treatment.
The boyfriend, Chika toldSunday Sun
"I am a driver and I've been dating Chinwe for the past five years. We had little quarrel and we stopped dating. I meet Cynthia who is a prostitute and dated her for just one month. We separated one month after because at times she would be chasing me with a knife. I couldn't bear it and so I went back to settle with my former girlfriend. Cynthia didn't give up as she threatened that she was going to deal with us. She even threatened to pour acid on me.
Being a driver, I travelled the day Cynthia burnt my girlfriend. It was one of my neighbours that called me to say that my house was on fire and that somebody poured fuel under the door and it exploded and burnt my girlfriend who was sleeping in the room; that they have rescued her through the window.
"When I got home, I saw that all my property had been burnt to ashes. My girlfriend was hospitalized because she sustained injuries from the fire. But I am determined and I have promised God that with the condition of my girlfriend that I am still going to marry her."
The suspect, Cynthia, who hails from Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, said
"I started dating Chika when he had misunderstanding with his former girlfriend, Chinwe. We dated for one month and then he told me that he was no longer interested in marrying me. Chika is owing me N12,000. When we had a quarrel, I did not threaten him with a knife. I only used the knife to deflate his tyres.
"I have quarreled with Chinwe several times. I sent her a text message to leave my boyfriend. Because she threatened me, I also threatened her that she will never enjoy the relationship. I don't know anything about who took fuel to the house of her boyfriend and burnt the house. On that fateful day, Chika called my phone at night and said that I should meet him at Emene junction. I was out waiting for him when the policemen from the State CID arrested me. I didn't know anything about the incident. I only know we have traded words."
When Sunday Sun visited the victim at the Annunciation Specialist Hospital Emene Area, Enugu State, she said:
"I am still shocked at what happened. I regret dating Chika as I have been turned to something else now. I saw Cynthia Onah and Chukwuegbo Obiora after they had poured fuel under the door and fire was everywhere. I was calling him for help. It was when I was calling for help through the other window that I saw Cynthia Onah and Obiora Chkwuegbo running away and I was shouting for help until the neighbours broke one of the windows and carried me out from the window", she said.
"My relationship with Chika is over. I am in pains and agony. I didn't know what to do. I was sleeping and suddenly I saw smoke and it exploded and caught fire. I could have been burnt to ashes if not for the neighbours who broke through the window and rescued me," she added.
CP Adamu said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

“I didn’t rape her, she stripped herself naked” – Okada rider caught having sex with housewife

A married father of two, who is also a commercial motorcyclist aka “okada rider”, was allegedly caught red handed engaging in intercourse with a married woman in a deserted wooded area of Orlu, Imo State.

However, both parties to the act have told different stories about what transpired between them. The woman, a 45-year-old housewife, insists that she was being raped by the 30-year-old man while the motorcyclist insists that he and the woman are lovers.

According to reports, the woman said she engaged the motorcyclist at Orlu to take her to her matrimonial home at Obibi-Ochasi. She said when they got to a solitary area along the route, the man stopped ostensibly to ease himself.

She further told the police that while she was waiting for him to finish easing himself, the man emerged and started asking that they sleep together, adding that when she refused the amorous advance, the man grabbed her and forcefully lifted her into the bush.

The woman equally claimed that the rapist tore her inner wears to shreds, over-powered and raped her.

In his defence, the man claimed that the woman had been his concubine for years, adding that he had previously had fun with her at different times and places, including the spot where they were caught in the act.

He also claimed that he called the woman on her mobile line and asked her to meet him at the agreed spot in Orlu.

The man also claimed that when they got to the bush, the woman stripped herself naked, spread her wrapper on the ground and laid down before he started the act.

The randy motorcyclist, however, agreed that along the line there was a minor misunderstanding on the amount he should pay after they had satisfied themselves.

While the man claimed that the woman was asking for N500 for the service, he offered N200, which he said was the only money on him at the time.

Now, who are we to believe, the randy man or the married woman

Gunmen Kill 160, Abduct 10 Women in Zamfara

Gunmen has killed no fewer than 160 people and kidnapped 10 married women in Zamfara within three months.

The Zamfara State Governor, Abdulazez Yari, who said this on Monday, noted that the attacks were carried out in different villages of the state.

The governor also said the hoodlums, who continued to terrorise villages in parts of the state, stole no fewer than 6,000 cows and 4,000 sheep within the period.

While addressing members of the state House of Assembly on security situation in Gusau, Yari condemned the attacks.

He stated that the state government had spent some of its resources on ensuring security and urged the Federal Government to provide assistance.

“The situation has caused disaffection between residents of the affected villages and the state government. The state government is doing its best. Federal Government has to deploy more security personnel to the state to protect lives and property of the people,” he added.

Speaker of the state assembly, Alhaji Sanusi Rikijin, said, “We will consult with other state houses of assembly and the National Assembly to ensure justice, equity and fair play in the country.”

Tenant kills landlord and wife, sets house ablaze

Uyo - A tenant in Uyo, Akwa Ibom allegedly set his residence ablaze on Monday, killing his landlord and landlady.

The house is located at Asuquo Eyo Street in Ifa Ikot Okpon in the Uyo Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect, in his mid 40s, identified simply as Ime and popularly known as Shawa, was said to have threatened to burn down the house and kill his landlord and wife if they ejected him.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that Ime, allegedly kept his threat by stabbing his landlord, Edem Akpan, and the landlady, Affiong Udo to death, before setting the house ablaze.

Emem Akpan, the deceased’s daughter, narrated the incident to NAN, saying that trouble started when her father asked Ime to quit his house.

Akpan said that the suspect refused to park out and threatened that if her father insisted on ejecting him, he would kill them and burn down the house.

“We thought what he said was just a mere threat. None of us could believe that Ime was capable of doing what he said.”

“Two days ago, we saw him bringing worn-out tyres into the compound. We didn't know he had a plan.”

“Yesterday, before we left for church in the evening, he brought 20 litres of fuel, more than what his generator could contain.”

“I remember a neighbour asking him what he was going to do with such amount of fuel, but he told him that he was going to run the generator overnight.”

“This is what we saw this morning as we returned from church, that the fuel and worn-out tyres were weapons used by the assailant to kill my parents,” she said.

Ruth Jeremiah, another daughter of the deceased and ex-girlfriend of the suspect, said she parted ways with Ime over a year ago.

She said it was Ime’s crafty attitude of not letting her know his parents, his actual Local Government in Annang and even his surname that made her to terminate the relationship.

Jeremiah said that for the period she was with Ime, she did not know anything about his other names, except ‘Ime’ or ‘Shawa’.

She said that the suspect had removed all his property in the house on Sunday night before killing her parents and setting the house ablaze.

Jeremiah said that there was no tenancy agreement between her father and the suspect as the house was rented out, based on gentleman’s agreement.

The Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Etim Dickson, confirmed the incident, saying that the command was aware that an elderly man and the wife had been burnt to death.

Dickson said that investigation was going on to unravel the mystery surrounding the killing of the man and wife and the burning of their house.

“We are aware that a husband and wife have been set ablaze. We do not know the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

“We are still investigating the incident. No arrest has been made yet,” he said.

Arsenal sign Nigeria youth international defender Semi Ajayi

The lanky 19-year-old has signed a two-year contract as a free agent, after leaving Charlton Athletic from where he came through the ranks.
Ajayi spent last season on loan at non-League club, Dartford FC. But after leaving Charlton in the summer, he spent some time with Norwich City for whom he made a few appearances during pre-season before he was invited to have a trial at Arsenal.
The youngster impressed in the pre-season games he played for The Gunners against Blackburn Rovers and West Brom, and even got on the score sheet against the former, prompting the club to offer him a contract.
Ajayi is reported to have been a part of coach John Obuh's provisional squad for the Fifa Under-20 World Cup earlier this year.

ASUU blasts NUC, says strike continues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities said the existence of the National Universities Commission has not brought improvement to the standard of education in the country.
The union also said that it would not call off the strike because of the mere promise made by the Federal Government to provide revitalisation fund for the university system.
ASUU also called on the National Assembly to investigate the activities of NUC with a view to determining the continued relevance or otherwise of the university supervisory body.
If found irrelevant, ASUU said it should be scrapped.
Chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan chapter, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, who spoke in Ibadan noted that the NUC boss, Prof. Julius Okojie, had concentrated the effort of the university regulatory body on quantity rather than quality while issuing accreditation to universities.
Ajiboye said, “Okojie should take full responsibility for all his deeds in the NUC. Nigerians should be proud of ASUU in its efforts at repositioning public universities in the country.”
The union leader added that the result of the assessment exercise of NUC carried out by the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy should be used to judge the relevance of NUC and its leader rather than the self-assessment of  the regulatory agency.
He said some of the accreditations granted by NUC were enmeshed in controversy, wondering why the National Assembly had not taken action on the controversies surrounding the accreditations so far recorded.
He said, “One of the efforts of ASUU to reposition education in the country is the NEEDS Assessment document. This was a product of a rigorous academic exercise carried out by dependable and credible members of our union. Unlike the numerous faulty accreditation reports which had given these universities clean bill of health, the NEEDS Assessment Report stands out as a classical document of reference detailing the rot and decay in public universities in Nigeria.
“All well meaning Nigerians can see the contrast between Okojie’s packaged accreditation reports and a credible job done by ASUU. It has become very clear from the assessment document that Okojie and his people have fooled this country for too long. Time is now for government to beam a searchlight on the activities of the NUC. The education committees in both the Senate and House of Representatives have an arduous task to do here. Nigerians are calling for dismantling of an omnibus body that has done the country more harm than good.”
ASUU also reiterated its commitment to the current effort to gain Federal Government consent to its demand, saying that the strike would not be called off based on mere government promise.
Meanwhile, a non-governmental organisation, Do It Right Foundation, has appealed to the Federal Government and ASUU to work hard and resolve the lingering crisis that has shut down the education sector.
In a statement on Sunday, President and National Coordinator of the foundation, Mr. Dixon Jubril, called on  the university lecturers to give room for re-opening of  the universities  in the interest of the students.
“It has become a burden on both the government and ASUU to save the education sector from collapse by finding a common ground for the amicable resolution of the crisis. What both parties to the dispute must have in mind is that while the situation lingers it is the future of the students that is at stake.
“We call on ASUU in particular to shift ground a bit for the common good of the education system. It’s our belief that the time has come for ASUU to devise other means of settling its disputes with government instead of the constant disruption of academic activities with its attendant socio-economic implications.”

Jonathan asks Obama to assist Nigeria on counterterrorism

President Goodluck Jonathan has cried out to the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama yesterday when he urged him to “help fix Nigeria.”
Jonathan held a bilateral meeting with the U.S president at the Lyndon B. Johnson suite in the Waldorf-Astoria yesterday.
President Obama had while welcoming President Jonathan to their meeting at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, described Nigeria as a critical partner of the United States in Africa.
Obama noted that his last summer trip to Africa made him to realize common interests in helping Nigeria improve its rural electrification; empowering young people through the Young African Leaders programme; improving internal security in a way consistent with human rights as well as  “making sure” Nigeria’s elections in 2015 continue to improve the country’s democratic process.
“For you to fix the world, you must fix Africa. For you to fix Africa, you must fix Nigeria,” Jonathan told Obama.
In a later statement by Jonathan’s media aide, Reuben Abati, President Jonathan also applauded President Obama’s Power Africa and Youth Leadership Initiatives, saying that both initiatives would complement aspects of his administration’s agenda for national transformation.
“President Obama had while welcoming President Jonathan to their meeting at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, described Nigeria as a critical partner of the United States in Africa.
The statement on the meeting read in parts: “President Goodluck Jonathan Monday in New York called for a stronger global consensus and determination to end the scourge of terrorism as quickly as possible.
“Speaking at talks with President Barrack Obama of the United States ahead of the opening of the 68th session of the United Nations tomorrow, President Jonathan said that unless the international community unites and deploys its enormous resources to eradicate terrorism, it will continue to be embarrassed by terrorist outrages such as the heinous attack on defenceless shoppers in Nairobi at the weekend which both leaders strongly condemned.
“President Jonathan expressed his appreciation of the support and assistance Nigeria has been receiving from the United States for its fight against domestic terrorism. He added, however, that Nigeria will welcome even more bilateral collaboration in this regard.
“The President said his administration also looked forward to the further strengthening of Nigeria’s relations with the United States in the areas of trade and economic development.
“He reassured President Jonathan of his commitment to the continuous strengthening of Nigeria’s electoral processes and the country’s democratic institutions.
“President Jonathan was accompanied to the talks by the Minister of State (Foreign Affairs) Prof. Viola Onwuliri, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison Madueke, and the Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo”, it was stated.
President Jonathan also applauded President Obama’s Power Africa and Youth Leadership Initiatives, saying that both initiatives would complement aspects of his administration’s agenda for national transformation.
Obama assured President Jonathan that the United States will continue to cooperate with Nigeria in all possible areas, including the war against domestic and global terrorism.
On the attack at a Nairobi mall at the weekend, Obama noted that the attack “underscores” the level to which all countries are connected and their need to work together. And Jonathan expressed thus: “I feel the pain of President Kenyatta … terror anywhere is terror on all of us”.
“The United States will continue to cooperate with Nigeria in all possible areas, including the war against domestic and global terrorism.
“The United States will continue to work with the entire continent of Africa and around the world to make sure that we are dismantling these networks of destruction.”
“We stand with them against this terrible outrage that’s occurred, we will provide them with whatever law enforcement help that is necessary,” Obama said.
Obama was accompanied to the meeting by Secretary of State John Kerry, National Security Adviser Susan Rice, United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power and deputy chief of staff, Rob Nabors

ASUU dragged to National Industrial Court by Women’s Group, several reliefs sought

THE strike action embarked upon by university lecturers has assumed another dimension as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been dragged before the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) over the lingering strike action.
The suit, with the number NICW/Abj/242/2013 which also has ministers of labour and productivity, education, finance and justice, as well as secretary to the government of the federation as defendants, was instituted by the registered trustees of Golden Women of Integrity and Vision Association and Mrs. Florence Uche Ojieh.
In the suit, the claimants are asking the court to determine whether the strike action embarked upon by ASUU is not illegal and contrary to law and whether members of the union are not bound by the policy of ‘no work no pay’ and therefore not entitled to their salary during the period of the strike.
They also asked the court to determine whether members of ASUU are entitled to continue to retain their employment, having abandoned or deemed to have abandoned their work in the universities; whether or not the union complied with the mandatory provisions of Section 4 and 5 of the Trade Dispute Act CAP T8 LFN 2004 before embarking on the strike; whether the union has complied with the provision of Section 8 of the Trade Disputes Act CAP T8 LFN 2004; whether or not the minister of education is not entitled to determine the employment of the union, same having abandoned or deemed to have abandoned their work in their universities and whether or not the doctrine of collective bargain or the purported 2009 agreement can be the basis for the strike action by ASUU same not having been incorporated in their contract of employment between it and the federal government.
The reliefs sought by the claimants include a declaration that the strike action embarked upon by ASUU since July 2, 2013 is illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.
The claimants also sought a declaration of court that the strike action is unlawful and unwarranted in the face of the payment to the union by federal government of over N50 billion to meet ASUU’s demands from the government.

7 people dead as incessant rains hit many parts of Oyo

An unusual downpour has been witnessed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital as the rain has been pouring since Sunday evening with little respite.
Activities in the ancient city were paralyzed all through Monday and at least 7 people are feared dead.
According to reports, the areas worst hit were the Oluyole, Arapaja, Akala new extension and Lao hospital areas of the city.
The downpour also created heavy traffic snarl in major parts of the city, especially Mokola, Agbarigo, Onireke, Dugbe and Apata. Some residents of the affected area, it was gathered, have started relocating for fear of been washed away by the flood.
It was gathered that some people in Oluyole area fell into a collapsed bridge that was covered by the flood from the heavy downpour. In the same area, it was gathered that a man who attempted crossing the road was also washed away.
Some commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators, who were not aware that the bridge had caved in, also fell into the flood and were swept away.
A source at the state Fire Service department confirmed the development. The source however could confirm only two deaths. The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olabisi Ilobanafor, said the police was informed of the death of an old man, an okada rider and his passenger.
Several efforts made to contact the Chairman of the Caretaker Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Ayodeji Abass, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off.
As at the time of filing this report, the rain was still drizzling.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s administration had embarked on the dredging of most rivers in the city and construction of drainage in order to avoid a repeat of August 26, 2011 flood disaster in the state, which led to several deaths.

Demola Rewaju: 9ice is not so 9ice anymore

Apart from his failed relationships, another major challenge is that his repertoire is easily copied by others. Nobody has a monopoly or copyright of Yoruba proverbs which is the major source of 9ice’s music. Jaywon, Isolate and a few others are easily doing what 9ice does so he needs to up his game.

There was a time when Abolore Akande aka 9ice was the hottest in town as far as the music industry was concerned. As with all stars though, the shine never lasts forever but 9ice could have shone brighter and longer than many others because of his raw and fresh talent which gave him huge potential in the industry.

His first album ‘Certificate (2007)’ had songs like ‘Little Money’ and ‘Ganja Man (Pass Me Di Lighter)’ and was a hit. It was his sophomore album ‘Gongo Aso (2008)’ that blew the charts and took him to the top. 9ice headlined major concerts including Mandela’s 90th birthday in Hyde Park, London and a major concert in Cyprus which practically every Nigerian student attended. He also won awards from MTV Base to MOBO and Dynamix to ‘The Headies’.

‘Tradition (2009)’ confirmed 9ice as an A-list artiste. He was rumoured to have been paid NGN5m to perform at a top bank’s 2010 end of year party for just 20 minutes. By this time though, cracks were beginning to appear in his core relationships.

The 31 year old act had first appeared with rappers 2Shotz and Ruggedman in their hit songs ‘Make Dem Talk’ and ‘Opomulero’ respectively. In the latter, he propped his friend Ruggedy as the main issue in rap music in an obvious jab at ModeNine who then had running battles with Rugged over rapping in vernacular or English. 9ice’s producer was the beat-master ID Cabasa and he was very close to 2Phat, Jahbless and a host of others.

He married fashion icon and music promoter Toni Payne who had been and increasingly became a major part of his success. Any question you posed to her about 9ice then would be answered with veracity, from his favourite colour to his childhood moments, Toni would answer them.

In his third album, 9ice had a track ‘Once Bitten, Twice Shy’ where he refered to a woman’s infidelity with his friend. Everyone concluded it was Toni and Rugged he was referring to and 9ice made no effort to dispel the rumour. The affair became messy and ruined his relationship with his wife, his producer and many friends. Suddenly, 9ice had to forge new alliances in an industry where recognition only comes when you’re hot.

By the time he released ‘Versus and Bashorun Gaa’ in 2011, 9ice was almost becoming yesterday’s news. The albums were successful but not by the standards he’d set for himself with previous albums. ‘Versus’ featured a lot of artistes from different genres and saw 9ice struggling to assert himself on tracks with Timaya and Duncan Mighty. It wasn’t a surprise he flowed well with K1 de Ultimate as he was once a big fan of the fuji artiste Pasuma.

It would be 9ice to see him do collabos with major African acts using the platform of his traditional music. Angelique Kidjo, Yossou N’dour, Lagbaja, Papa Wemba, Awilo Logomba and maybe even Fally Ipupa would help his career.

As I said of my president and his wife, Toni was an important part of his success. Remember the video of his song ‘Photocopy’ where Toni dressed him up physically? I know she did that professionally too. Where 9ice would have been seen as little more than a street kid who got lucky, Toni made him look good.

I did a story on the Toni Payne/9ice/Rugged issue two years ago for a magazine and found that there was no truth in the infidelity allegations against which he failed to defend his wife and mother of his kid. I spoke with Toni and saw a woman desperate to protect her husband while battling the allegations of infidelity. Curiously, she still worked with ID Cabasa to produce Olamide and is still friends with Ruggedman which seems to prove that they are standing by her side of the story. The response of the 9ice camp through one Oladeinde was quite haughty.

Finally, confidence is good and a little bragging isn’t bad in hiphop. Personal humility though is a necessity especially when relating with industry topshots. 9ice is definitely not the most humble artiste in Nigeria.

“Dad, I have been shot in the neck and hand. I am bleeding. Come and help me please,” his 21-year-old son begged.

Mwangi said he jumped in his car and sped across Nairobi to the Westgate shopping mall, where a group of Somali Islamist gunmen had stormed in to kill shoppers and staff.

Stuck in Nairobi’s traffic logjam, he called his son again.

“Don’t call me again,” was the reply. “I just want you to get me out of here. If they hear me talking, they are going to kill me!”

“It took me about an hour to access the area,” Mwangi recounted. “I was crying and pleading with the police to save my son. I remember shouting like a kid, crying and crying but they wouldn’t let me through.”

Relief finally came five hours later, when his injured son was among a group of people located and evacuated by security forces who were sweeping the mall shop by shop. He was rushed to Nairobi’s Aga Khan University Hospital and was undergoing emergency surgery.

“I pray that he will be OK,” the shocked father said. “Why would these people do this to us?”

Another victim, mall worker Zipporah Wanjiru, emerged from the ordeal alive but in a state of total shock.

“They were speaking some language I could not understand,” she said of the attackers. “I could not understand anything – but the sound of their voices was scary.”

Wanjiru says she hid under a table together with other five colleagues.

“They were shooting indiscriminately, it was like a movie seeing people sprayed with bullets like that,” she said, bursting into tears. “I have never witnessed this in my life. Only God can heal us and our country.”

Cafe waiter Titus Alede said it was a “miracle from God” that he managed to escape the approaching gunmen.

“I was serving a client and these men came. They were not after money as they were shooting people without asking for anything. I remember them saying ‘you killed our people in Somalia, it is our time to pay you back’,” he recounted.

Alede risked his life and leapt from the first floor of the mall and “the death that I saw coming”.

“It was a miracle from God,” he said of his escape.

Another survivor, Cecilia, said she spent a cold, terrifying night hiding underneath a car in the parking area before she was rescued by Kenyan soldiers. — AFP

I’m a prodigal daughter; forgive me mum! – Glo X Factor winner, DJ Switch, cries

Glo X Factor winner, DJ Switch
For abandoning her mother and siblings while searching for fame and fortune, fast rising rapper and winner of the maiden edition of Glo X Factor, Obianuju Catherine Udeh aka DJ Switch, has begged for forgiveness. The 29-year-old Geology graduate of the University of Port Harcourt was declared winner of the Globacom sponsored music reality TV show at the grand finale held in Lagos and beamed to million of viewers across the continent yesterday. She beat two other contestants, Ethel Eshun and Vicky Gomoti in the last round of voting to win a whopping N24 million cash prize and a recording contract with Sony Music. In an exclusive interview with The Entertainer, the indigene of Udi, Enugu State, said she felt bad for abandoning home for more than a year while pursuing her music career and now that she has made it, she’s asking for forgiveness. “I am sorry mum for being away from home for so long while in search of glory. Now that I am back, I will take good care of you,” DJ Switch declares in tears.
Switch likened herself to a prodigal son who got opportunities but frittered them away. “I was like a prodigal son who had an opportunity in the past but due to youthful exuberance I mismanaged the resources. Now, I am a better person and more matured, I won’t disappoint my mum and my fans.”
The rapper whose single, Landing Safely, would be released next week, vowed to continue working as long as she lives. “For me, it’s going to be work, work and work,” she promised.
Journey to fame and fortune
However, before the announcement of the results, the expectation of the audience, judges and contestants had built to a crescendo as everybody waited anxiously to find out who the first X Factor winner in Africa would be. The suspense was to last even longer as Glo ambassador from Ghana, Efya came on stage for a wonderful performance that had the audience applauding rapturously.
After her performance, X Factor host, Toolz, turned to the judges and sought to know how they felt about the night. Reggie was the first to respond, saying: “I’m so excited that I brought my wife with me so we can both be excited together. It’s been a beautiful journey; I can’t wait to see who will walk away with the money.”
On his own part, the rapper popularly known as Mr. Incredible (MI) says: “It’s been incredible. The crew; light guys, my fellow judges and the contestants have all been wonderful.”
And when Toolz asked Onyeka who she thought would be the winner that night, she answered with a smile: “I was so excited, I brought my Bible along with me. At this stage, I think the last three contestants have all won.”
Shortly afterwards, 2008 UK X Factor winner, delectable Alexandra Burke, mounted the stage for a wonderful performance that drew a resounding applause from the audience. The three finalists, DJ Switch, Eshun and Vicky later joined Burke on stage to perform Hallelujah chorus.
Flavour came on stage next to thrill the audience with a scintillating performance. The musician proved why he was a crowd favourite as people rose to their feet to sing and dance along with him. After Flavour’s performance, the contestants came out to sing the original songs they sang at the audition stage. Vicky was the first to perform and she got a standing ovation from the three judges.
“How did your daughter perform?” Toolz inquired of Onyeka.
“She has grown from a pupa to a butterfly. She sang with confidence and inner joy. I had goose pimples just listening to her. I have no doubt that she’ll make it. May God bless you,” Onyeka says.
To Reggie, Vicky just proved that “our work has not been in vain.”
And MI said: “Wow, Vicky is just so amazing. You are absolutely stunning. They way you’re radiating joy; don’t keep it to yourself, please, share with the world.”
DJ Switch
DJ Switch came up next engendering a boisterous response from the crowd with her performance of Jay Z’s Forever Young. Reacting to her performance, MI said: “Switch, people scream when you perform because you inspire us all. When you came for the audition, I felt you tried. I had already made up my mind that you wouldn’t make it to my final three mentees, but you changed my mind. Everybody here needs to know that no matter what people say about you, it doesn’t matter as long as you fight.”
Reggie gushed: “DJ Switch, you are inspirational; you excite me. My children love you; everybody loves you!”
And Onyeka opined thus: “Unlike the other judges, the moment you stepped on stage, I knew you had it.”
Eshun was the next to perform, and she pulled out all the stops as she shimmered in her green attire. “One of the best things on this programme is that I got to mentor Vicky and Eshun. She is exquisite, beautiful, gorgeous and talented. She walks onto the stage and lights it up. You have something that is very special. No matter what happens here, you have me permanently in your camp. You will take the world by storm!” Onyeka declared.
MI said: “You are a perfect example of what this show is all about. You epitomize everything X Factor stands for. You’ve been one of my favourites.”
Her Ghanaian countryman, Reggie, commented: “My story with my sister is different. We come from the same place and people expect me to give her a pass. It often seems as if I’m tough on you, but look at where you stand now. You have done well!”
The climax
It was the moment everybody has been waiting for. It was the moment when the result of the long drawn competition would be announced. As the clock ticked away, the contestants held hands as they anticipated the results that would change the life of one of them forever. Toolz invited the representative from Alexandra Forbes onto the stage, lingered a bit and teased the audience as she twirled the green envelope containing the results in her hands.
“And the first winner of the Glo X Factor West Africa is… DJ Switch!” Toolz announced as the crowd erupted in jubilation.
The first runner-up was Eshun and she got N1 million for her efforts, while Vicky, the second runner-up, also got N1 million

EXCLUSIVE: How Apo raid happened.....hmmmm wats really happnin?

APO killing 1Nigerians woke up Friday morning to the news of a midnight shootout at a street behind Zone E of the Legislative Quarters in Abuja’s Apo district, a location where mansions of highly placed citizens, especially federal legislators are found in excess.
As residents were asleep in the wee hours of September 20, heavy gunfire rented the air, a situation uncommon in such highbrow occupied by the nation’s elites. The unpleasant sounds with its attendant echo sent jitters down the spine of those awake already. The time was 3:00am.
Within an hour, no fewer than seven persons had been felled by the bullets of the security agents. More than ten others were injured. The federal agents recorded no casualty.
There has been a huge outcry over the incident. While many people believe that the onslaught was against innocent citizens, federal officers say they acted on an intelligence report that the house they raided – a building used as abode by squatters – was shelter to some members of the Boko Haram sect.
However, the surviving victims maintain the onslaught was connected to an earlier warning by the owner of the uncompleted one-storey building, a top army officer.
“He had asked us to leave his property immediately,” a survivor told newsmen from his hospital bed at the Asokoro General Hospital.
But the State Security Service explained that it acted on information obtained from Boko Haram suspects, Mohammed Adamu and Kamal Abdullahi.
Marilyn Ogar, agency’s spokesperson, said officers acted on a tip-off by the duo that weapons cache were stocked in the building.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, an SSS officer who was part of team, told DailyPost that the aim of the operation, carried out with the assistance of the Nigeria Army, was to recover arms buried at a cemetery by an influential Boko Haram member
The suspect, the arms
“Before the raid, we had placed that area under surveillance some time. One of the suspects we arrested earlier confirmed that a strong member of the sect, in company of his foot soldiers, was squatting in that building.
“He described the guy as a rugged fellow who would not go down without a fight. That several attempts at catching him failed because he’s good with weapons and usually escapes arrest.
“This suspect also disclosed that the guy in question buried the arms at a cemetery close by, that he and others would open fire if they see any movement around the cemetery especially if it was not during the day.
“We have never been to the particular house before the operation. No SSS officer would say that, so don’t believe anything contrary. We, we only went round to figure out how we’ll move in.
“But I can confirm we kept tab on the quarters from Tuesday September 17 through Thursday night.
The shootings
“The truth is it was the Boko Haram guys within that house that started firing when they heard movement. We are professionals; we know what is at stake. So we could not have gone there and open fire just like that. The SSS always respect the rule of engagement.
APO killing 2“As we were digging the suspected location of the armoury, several gunshots were directed at us. We had no choice than to defend ourselves.
“It was that point we realized that the suspect told the truth when he warned that we would be attacked. If you check, virtually all the survivors were hit at their back, buttock, or leg.
“This tells you that they were probably the innocent ones who were trying to flee because some of the occupants actually confronted us.
Timing of the raid
“Firstly, the operation was ours not the military’s; we called them in. We chose middle of the night for two reasons. One: To avoid civilian casualty or stray bullet incidence that may arise from exchange of the anticipated gun battle. Two, those guys are mostly found there at dusk.
SCENE WHERE PEOPLE WERE KILLED BY UNKNOWN GUNMEN IN APO 2“The thing is they pretend to be law-abiding citizens during the day. Agreed that, they all have what they do for a living but most use this to cover their evil deed. You’ll find that some sell suya, sachet water, or do ‘mai ruwa’ (water-selling cart-pushers) and ‘mai shayi’ (food sellers). Others hawk goods in traffic, clean vehicle windscreen, sell fruits, ride keke (tricycles), etc.
“And let me add that the same suspect who gave us the information and took us to Apo legislative quarters is a keke rider at Garki market. In fact, he was busy loading passengers the day we picked him up. Some were already seated, while he was calling for more.
“So you see that the claim that they have a means of livelihood is a decoy. True, some in that building may be clean, but going by the information we had, a good number of insurgents were in that building.
Survivors’ claim of innocence
“We hear such statements every day. It is because this one happened in Abuja, that’s why some of them are looking for sympathy of Nigerians and international community. It is for the attention.
“In Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kano and other places where the sects strike, you have cases like this. They all occupy a building, tell you they have one job or the other and before you blink, you’ll find weapons everywhere.
“More worrisome is the age of the suspects. You will be shocked if you see the number of young chaps that we’ve arrested. These are confirmed Boko Haram members! Not only can they handle a rifle, they can use well.
SCENE WHERE PEOPLE WERE KILLED BY UNKNOWN GUNMEN IN APO 1Presence of Boko Haram in the Federal Capital Territory
“They are very well around. Anyone denying that they are not present is deceiving his or herself. We recovered some arms at the Apo raid, which means these guys have more in other discreet places in Abuja.
“You never can tell; a man that offers service to you may be member of a sect and that’s terrible because when they strike, it’s always disastrous.
“There is a check point at the entrance of the quarters but these guys still manage to move in arms. That means it’s no longer a small problem.
Advice for government
“Now is the time for the government to spend more on intelligence gathering. In as much as the funding for security has increased, it is still not enough. I have faced insurgents many times and trust me, those guys are ruthless.
“You know they are like guerrillas; they strike and run away. Before you call Police or any other outfit, they are gone and the damage is done.
“Government should not wait until insurgents go about shooting people in public places.

REVEALED: Real Reason Why Federal Government Does Not Want ASUU Strike To End

Nigerian universities have been buffeted with agonising months of strikes for over a decade and until now, the story is pretty much the same. Government is still unwilling to give the education sector a shot in the arm.
Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has been on strike since June 30 and has dialogued with FG over 11 times, albeit, inconclusively.
This underscores the lukewarm posture of government towards the striking lecturers and from ASUU’s body language and utterances,  they have made it abundantly clear to anyone who cares to listen that they are ready to continue the strike even if it takes years, insisting that their decision was adequately taken in a bid to revitalise Nigerian universities.
The bone of contention is lucid in itself. An agreement was reached in 2009 that all federal universities would require a total sum of N1.5 trillion spread over three years (2009-2011) to address the rot and decay in the universities.
But, in the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed between the union and the government in 2012, FG decided to extend the gesture to include both federal and state universities. After the 2012 review, it was agreed that instead of N1.5 trillion, FG would infuse a total of N1.3 trillion into the universities over four years.
Almost four years down the line, FG has refused to fulfill its end of the bargain. Rather than respond to the issues raised by the union that would ensure quick resolution to the imbroglio, government boycotted ASUU to summon a meeting with Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of universities, offering them N130 billion with a matching order to lecturers to resume work immediately.
But the union is insisting that by throwing money at universities in that manner, government has repudiated the 2009 agreement it entered freely with the union and the 2012 MoU. ASUU is not making any fresh demand but has maintained that the 2009 agreement must be honoured.
It is ridiculous that government officials were quoted as saying ASUU’s N1.3 trillion demand is capable of shutting down the country. No. Their insatiable and rapacious greed will.
The private jets in the presidential fleet can fly, centenary celebrations is a priority to government, there’s enough money to pay humongous salaries and allowances to federal legislators and other political office holders, enough to forfeit to oil subsidy thieves, enough to pay militants bogus amnesty cheques and phantom contracts while they continue to bunker our crude oil like never before, there’s enough money to beg Boko Haram to accept amnesty but there is no money for law abiding Nigerian students who want to eke out a living using university education as a stepping stone. It is this kind of attitude from the government that provokes the use of brute force by some regional groups to attract government’s attention to their problems.
Government cannot claim it has no money to fulfill this agreement. A country with 109 senators earning about N19.6 billion a year, while N51.8 billion is spent on members of House of Representatives for the same period, totaling N71.4 billion.
This sum, N71.4 billion, represents 17.8 per cent of the N400bn yearly intervention fund recommended by the Committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities. Surely, our lecturers and universities where they were trained deserve more.
When we talk of heath care, government official and the ruling elite go abroad for medical attention; we talk of bad roads, they fly private jets; we talk of power, they run their homes on 24-7 alternative electricity source; now we’re talking Education, their wards are in some of the best universities abroad. There is no way the myriad of problems bedeviling the country can be tackled if the political elite don’t feel the pangs.
That Mr. President has taken out time from his ‘busy’ schedule to constantly parley with the warring factions of his party, PDP, but has never sat down with ASUU members to chart a course for Nigeria’s leaders of tomorrow clearly shows his priorities. Party affairs and chasing perceived enemies of his 2015 ambition around with apparatus of state are far more important things than bending over backwards to pander to the demands of the striking lecturers.
But then, government must take into cognisance the fact that, the longer the students remain at home, chances are that they will be lured into social vices. The aftermath can be disastrous for the state.
There are misplaced calls in some quarters for ASUU to be ‘reasonable’, accept FG’s offer and return to classrooms. Others lambast them for being self-centered and unpatriotic. It is unfortunate that Nigerians are always looking for quick fix solutions to monumental problems. Less endowed countries like Ghana, Botswana and Angola are making giant strides on all fronts because the citizenry have at one point or the other insisted that the needful be done. Here, anything thrown at us is accepted with glee.
We must get our priorities right as a country. Government must curb its own excesses. Education must be given the attention it deserves. Education of the citizenry should not be subjected to any form of Negotiation. Negotiating the education of our leaders of tomorrow is more or less negotiating the future of the country.
Government deliberately wants the strike to linger, first, to blackmail the opposition. There have been several unsavoury comments from the government’s divide of the negotiation table that ASUU has been infiltrated by moles from the opposition, alleging that the strike has lingered to gain political capital. That is how low this government can stoop. We have seen it before. It is an irresponsible and shameless government, one that lacks integrity and honesty that will blame the opposition for all its woes. It is unbecoming for the government of the day to continue to heap its failure on the doorstep of the opposition and ASUU strike is just another avenue to paint the opposition black before the public.
Second, is to send a strong signal to other unions who might be contemplating similar action to have a rethink. Perhaps, government thinks by acceding to ASUU’s demands, other Labour unions might toe the same path at the slightest excuse.
Third, the ultimate aim of government is to paint a bad image of the association to Nigerians, at least, for as long as the strike persists. The Governor Gabriel Suswan-led NEEDS Report Implementation Committee mediating on behalf of the government has unfortunately taken a position that is false, dishonest, and calculated to misinform the public and cause disaffection towards the union.
Rather than seek cheap popularity, Governor Suswan and the rest of the FG team should tow the part of honour by asking
President Goodluck Jonathan to honour the 2009 agreement. There’s no basis for turning the heat on ASUU and the campaign of calumny.
It calls for worry, that same government that has always maintained that ‘our graduates are unemployable’ and our universities churn out ‘half-baked graduates’ find it difficult to commit the much needed funds to revamp the universities.

A Girl Cuts Her Friend With A Blade Because She Snatched Her Sugar Daddy

UNEDITED TEXT AS POSTED BY THE AUTHOR

THE VICTIM

THE SUSPECT WHO CUT HER FRIEND’S FACE
A girl cuts her friend with a razor blade after she learnt her friend(neighbor) whom she introduced to her sugar daddy went behind her back to have sex with her sugar daddy this was disclosed by an eye witness at the scene said this occurred yesterday 17th,September at Inikpi street, High level ,Makurdi , Benue State at about 11 am .I did not upload it immediately due to the fact that i wanted to get the whole story first.
According to the eye witness , as the girl went to confront her friend and the whole issue blew out of hand. That led to the girl using a razor blade on her friend and like that was not bad enough some witness at the scene took laws into their hands by stripping the girl who cut her friend naked…Ouch!
All this just for a sugar daddy whom may have other more girls hidden or may have a wife and kids lol i called it “just” but it doesn’t seem like it was “just a sugar daddy” to this girls if they could risk their lives for him.
In an effort to get more information on why and what really happened, NTB (naija tidings blog ) interviewed someone closer to both feuding parties to know why and what really happened.
NTB gathered from this source that what was speculated at the scene of this disgraceful incidence was based on assumptions by witnesses and the fight did not erupt because the girl snatched her friends sugar daddy rather, it was because the girl bleeding from the cut insulted the other girls mother calling her an ashawo (prostitute). This led to this violent fiery argument and eventually assault on both feuding parties. The whole incidence was controversial and inhumane but some things were clear about the story ,two girls got into a heated argument, one was deeply cut by the other girl using a razor blade and passerby and witnesses took laws into their own hands by stripping the other girl naked and beating her
This whole situation is horrible and inhumane …i mean is it worth all this drama and violence?
see more pictures below and anticipate the footage of this incidence later on NTB

The Dirty Details of Monalisa Chinda and Nzeribe’s Failed Affair

It was Tuesday August 27 and another lifeless day filled with uncertainties, inconsistencies and a shameful lack of direction at Monalisa, the white elephant magazine misadventure of Lanre Nzeribe and Monalisa Chinda.
Lisa had suddenly gone AWOL for close to a month from her ceremonial publisher’s seat, staff being owed 2 months’ salary and Lanre was stalling. He rarely showed up in the office and whenever he did, he barely spoke with anyone before he would zoom off again in his black Maserati. Outside, he was always conscious to give off a deceptive public image:
The hip ‘big boy’ and perfect gentleman to camouflage his real insensitive, aloof and condescending sides.

Back to the farce at 19 Ademola Adetokunbo Street, Victoria Island (Chase Mall). After their publicised breakup, there were whispers Lisa had reconciled with Lanre and was coming back to her ceremonial seat. The ‘news’ cheered up some of the junior staff. It wasn’t surprising because to some degree, she was the life of the party in the company with her chirpy, free-spirited, girl-next-door, almost simpleton nature.
Some of the workers wanted to buy coloured cardboard and decorative materials and another one got external speakers from outside the office. The driver had angrily left the company two weeks earlier because he said Lanre paid him N25, 000 as salary instead of N40, 000 they had agreed, so I offered to drive them to the store.

While waiting at the park of the megastore, I glanced at my wristwatch. It was 3pm. The ‘party’ was ready, but no word yet from the ‘red carpet’ guest. I decided to call her.

“Hello Keshi, what’s happening in the office?” she asked.

“Nothing, really,” I replied and hesitated to gauge her mood. “…just that some of the staff are excited you’re coming back and are planning a small welcome for you.”

“Oh, no ooo. Who said I’m coming back? I’m not ooo. I’m not talking with Lanre. I don’t know what they’re talking about,” she answered tongue-in-cheek.

Let me pause here and introduce myself. My name is Kelvin Keshi and, until Thursday August 29, was the Assistant Editor of Monalisa Magazine. Lisa and Lanre had hired me sometime in April, on the recommendation of a mutual friend, to help set up a trendy lifestyle magazine that would in no time set the pace in its genre. Even though it was an onerous task, I was set for the challenge and knew I could draw from my skills and experience to deliver on their request.

I earnestly set off for work, most of the time multi-tasking as editor, administrative and human resources manager and working late into the night. Incidentally, I had another offer from an Abuja-based company to be an Assistant Editor and Lagos bureau chief of a political magazine but I turned it down on the excuse that I just got engaged with a similar job and wanted to give it 100 percent.

I remember the several meetings I had with Lanre, Lisa and the mutual friend – sometimes lasting till 10:30 pm – to discuss and deliberate on issues like editorial thrust, philosophy, mission, vision, target demography, templates, sectionalisation, themes, pagination, story ideas, online presence, USPs, advert generation, circulation and distribution and staffing for the magazine.

In all of these sessions I noticed almost everyone else was shallow about what they really wanted; but after much prodding, Lisa said she‘d like a lifestyle magazine with a mass appeal.

Truth is, they were largely vague about the new magazine concept, but I still tried to decrypt their nebulous ideas, concretised, gave life and substance, documented and presented to them.

But as it would appear eventually, that was all Lanre wanted from me: to use me to set up the magazine and then whip up and amplify inexistent and inconsequential issues along the way as convenient alibis to sever the working relationship. I first suspected when he issued three-month temporary employment to the first batch of staff and arbitrarily fixed salaries without giving room for negotiations. When I questioned it, he said salaries would be reviewed upwardly at the end of the three months and permanent employment letters issued. Lies!

Also in breach of initial discussions before I agreed to resign a job and join him, he affixed the title ‘Assistant Editor’ to my name instead of ‘Editor.’ Curiously, after all editorial work had been concluded, he introduced his sister, Ejine, as ‘Editor’ and requested me to forward all edited materials to her. Another devious stunt by Lanre to sell and credit my intellectual work to someone else.

Ingenious! This is the true Lanre. (You’ll wonder why this guy cannot maintain five seconds of eye contact. Psychologists, go figure. And no, he isn’t shy). It was the same manipulative ploy he used against the first Fashion Editor, Margaret that forced her to resign angrily after he paid her N50, 000 less than the agreed sum on the sly excuse that she didn’t write enough articles. Amusingly, his current ‘Fashion Editor’ and ‘Creative Director’ cannot boast of a single story in the magazine!

I only fear for some people. But I guess the saying ‘once bitten, twice shy’ doesn’t ring a bell for everyone. Ejine never showed up in the office once and her editing via e-mails was just so-so, forcing me to re-edit again.

Lanre also asked that since stories for the first edition were completed, my team and I should write for subsequent editions which I obliged him out of trust. As I discovered later, his wily game plan was to get as much intellectual and editorial contents out of me for subsequent editions before he schemes me out of the set-up. (Round of applause dude, but like the Warri man would say, ‘Lanre, this time, u don dive rock.’).

He who pays the piper…
The next day, Lisa was back in the office and to her glorified seat after a month forced hiatus. Lanre too was there, as happy as a lark – or more fittingly, like a little boy whose stolen toy had just been found. They wanted to meet separately with some staff members over some petty non-work related issues. Lanre had deliberately sensationalised with willing pawns to create distractions and play out his script of getting rid of me after I’d created a working structure for him.

Lanre repeated those same trivial lines – about some staff having tiffs, being emotionally attached to each other and some people not working enough. …The same worn-out quibbles he had rehashed over and over again and magnified as excuse also not to pay salaries.

For the benefit of doubt, all editorial assignments for the first issue had been completed, edited and designed on the template and he had no complaints about that. In assigning stories, editing them or relating with my team, I operated with a spirit of fairness, objectivity and balance; the very sacred principles of ethical journalism.

Only the pictures and images were outstanding. He had hired a flashy and dreadlocked mannequin ‘Creative Director’ with zero media experience or knowledge and side-lined the professional freelance photographer that was initially engaged for magazine images. But it was taking Mr ‘Luxury’ forever to get the job done.

He was an overly ambitious, smooth-talking, I-know-it-all-and-should-lead-the-team kind of guy. He understood Lanre’s self-centred language of luxury and elitism and fully explored it to manipulate him to take some drastic decisions, including his breakup with Lisa.

Chuks (the guy’s name) said Lanre had handed over the project to him and he was ecstatic about it. He told me Lanre said he (Chuks) was now ‘in-charge’ of the project and could sack anyone he wanted. He said Lanre had been having private meetings with him and told him he wanted to lay me off.

I felt offended and asked why. He was rambling on I ‘not being able to lead the team’ or ‘being incompetent.’ How? What insult! Was the magazine not ready for the first issue, from an editorial point? Were my stories watery and substandard? Like Lanre when I confronted him (with due deference though), Chuks was incoherent.

True to the assertion, Lanre cut off communication with me, and without a cogent justification, gave off a body language that suggested he was done with me. All of these were after I’d laid the foundation that none of them had the knowledge or experience to do.

I knew Lanre’s game plan. He (and his ilk) only sees people as tools; so Chuks blind ambition was a perfect diversion and pawn until he’s filled and needs to go on to the next meal. Chuks kept changing concepts and philosophies at will midway through production and walking through a maze. He was what you might call inefficiently busy (maybe eye service or in Warri lingua, ‘forming activity’). The team was groping in the dark.

They had no idea. It was three months and the debut issue was not out, except my team’s editorial contents that were 100 percent complete. Where in the world does a greenhorn photographer-turned-Creative-director-overnight lead a magazine project? Without a single previous experience? It was a cul-de-sac!

Laughably, they want to build the fantasy magazine on the stories my team and I had painstakingly researched and written. But I have my aces up my sleeve. I’ll come to that later. On behalf of his future victims, I want to change Lanre’s (and his ilk) skewed and twisted use-and-dump immoral business beliefs and gimmicks.

But I digress. Back to Lanre’s merry-go-round ‘luxury’ magazine house. Sneakily, he blamed the editorial unit still for the delays. ‘How, sir?’ I asked him exasperatedly. But he kept prevaricating. How dumb did he think everybody was! If he thinks he could buy people’s voice and opinion and maybe love, I wonder what makes him think integrity, intelligence and grit are for sale too.

He had obviously schooled Lisa on what he wanted – of course without the underlying motives – and she was already playing the tunes he dictated while putting on a flaky bold face. Classic Lisa! Even when it seems she finally has an opinion of her own, it’s always shaded by Lanre’s ego-fuelled preferences and biases which often border on his crave for a God-like reverence and being ensconced in his little elitist burble world. God help you if Lisa agrees with you on a matter in private and Lanre has a differing opinion later. She’ll deny you flatly.

The lies you didn’t know
She was back on the project and they were suspending the editorial unit, she announced to me in Lanre’s presence. Rather than being miffed, I was amused and felt pity for this stunted project. In the weeks Lisa went missing, Chuks had suggested to Lanre that to publish a ‘luxury magazine for upper class citizens,’ as they myopically re-termed it midway, he doesn’t need the editorial unit on full-time (Huh? Tell me about it. Definitely, another world first!).

Not surprisingly, Lisa did a volte-face and agreed – a sharp contrast to our discussions on phone when she was away on protest, long before it became public.

“I know there’s a problem. You’ve not been in the office for two weeks now. Please what’s happening?” I had enquired.

“It’s a very deep problem, Kelvin. Chuks wanted pictures of naked girls in the magazine and Lanre is on the same page with him, but I don’t want to be part of any of that.

He told Lanre to remove me as publisher and face of the magazine and that the magazine project can go on without me, and would you imagine Lanre agreed? He’s changing the magazine at will and spiritually manipulating Lanre. Chuks is illuminati. He’s evil and God will scatter them.”

“But I don’t understand why Mr. Lanre has stopped communicating with me. Does he have any complaints about my work?” I asked, deliberately sidestepping the rash of issues she raised.

“No. Your writings are standard and OK for any standard magazine anywhere,” she replied in measured tones. She paused and then asked, “Are they still planning to use my name as the title of the magazine?”

“I can’t say categorically; Mr. Lanre doesn’t talk with me much. But Monalisa’s still the name on the template.”

‘’I can’t allow them use the name I built as a brand over the years. How can I take it back?”

“Just get it registered with the Copyright Commission and the National Library. And if they still go ahead to publish the magazine with the name, you can report them and the government agencies will take it from there.” I shrugged and paused. I didn’t want to be part of this any longer. It was clear too many things were wrong at once. “But I didn’t bargain for all these…” I complained.

“I’m sooo sorry, Kelvin. I’m really sorry about how everything turned out…” Her voice was tired.

“What are you going to do now?”

“I just want to leave the country to clear my head. Later, I’ll work on my project, a tv talk show.”

“Great. Although I wished you guys would reconcile; it would be great for the magazine. You’re the brand they wanted to leverage on. Most new magazines don’t last beyond a lifespan of six months because certain key elements are missing.”

“No; I’m not coming back. It’s a deep spiritual problem.”

Two weeks later, Lisa was back and giving her nod to Lanre’s baseless grudge against me. But that was OK; the atmosphere was suffocating already. One week later, I sent Lanre an SMS requesting for my salary and that I had other engagements that wouldn’t allow me frequent visit to his office to recover his debt to me. He felt offended. “I advice (sic) that all communication from you should be in writing and directed to the company, please do not use this channel to reach me again,” his reply read in part. I sensed the Nigerian typical case of social class bullying.

It’s half time whistle
Piqued, I called Lisa to complain. But she told me to stop calling her too. She told me she was with him when my message came into his phone. “I don’t even know why I’m dignifying you with a response,” she added cheekily. Such a cocky submission from Madam ‘Celebrity’ and ‘Superior.’ But I knew that attitude: the tame voice of Jacob and the wild, arrogant hand of Esau – as always.

Well, I have a piece of advice for them too: THEY SHOULDN’T BOTHER PUBLISHING THE MAGAZINE WITH THE STORIES IN THE TEMPLATE ALL OF WHICH I EDITED, EXCEPT THEY DON’T MIND PUBLISHING STALE ARTICLES. Rather, Lanre should tell whichever ‘editor’ he plans to name on the masthead to get a new set of writers, write new stories for his or her editing for the magazine.

I will never allow Lanre credit my intellectual work to another ‘editor.’ It’s a promise because all the stories and articles are with me and I will publish them online and in newspapers and magazines before his magazine goes to press.

Already my lawyers have slammed them with a court notice over the monies they owe me. Lanre (and Lisa too) probably thinks I’ll be cowered by the ‘might’ of his wealth and high-powered connection. They also probably believe that as ‘upper class citizens’ – as they have classified their stillborn magazine – I should beg, grovel and lick their boots in exchange for the ‘favour’ of being given MY OWN MONEY. But they fall into the common trap some people make when relating with ‘unknown’ persons. Asides, an ‘unknown’ cannot be stereotyped.

Lanre and Lisa have had their time in the sun to play, trampling at will on my right, dignity and pride. But the half-time whistle has gone and it’s substitution time. It’s my time to play on the field and I sooo want to score!
