“I was not inactive in the Senate, I co-sponsored the anti-gay bill!”: It’s Ngige’s turn to go defensive

Anambra Governor, Peter Obi and one of his predecessors, Senator Chris Ngige are at it again.
The Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, Chris Ngige, dismissed the allegation that he has essentially been idle at the Senate, failing to sponsor any bill in the upper chamber of the legislature.
The senator, who represents Anambra Central in the National Assembly, made the rebuttal on Tuesday at Ayom N’Okpala, where he held a town hall meeting with members of the Awka North and South Federal Constituency.
He said contrary to the impression that had been created, he co-sponsored three bills, which he named as the Anti-Gay Bill, the Health Bill and the National Health Insurance Bill.
Governor Obi had last week lashed out at the three senators representing the state, for their inactiveness at the Senate, saying that they had even failed to sponsor a single bill in their 30-month tenure.
But Ngige said those who had criticised him, were only trying to score cheap political points, in view of the forthcoming governorship election in the state, in which he is a key participant.
In what sounded like an attempt at towing the patriotic servant line, he said that at a point, he was compelled to represent the entire state in the Senate, when the state did not have representatives from the two other senatorial zones.
He also said that apart from the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President, no senator had attracted more constituency projects to his constituency than him.
Ngige told his audience to ignore reports that he was among 34 senators that had not initiated any bill in the Senate, calling his inclusion in the report, a handiwork of his enemies, who wanted to dent his credentials.
