The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the Jonathan
administration for showing insensitivity to the plight on students by
throwing political jamborees even as students groaned at home as the
ASUU strike continues to linger.
In a statement released by the interim National Publicity Secretary
of the opposition party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the Federal
Government did not place education as one of its top priorities, and
preferred politicking to national development.
The party said that two mega, money-guzzling dinners had been thrown
by the Jonathan administration in Abuja since the strike started and
these were perhaps the best example of the aphorism ‘Nero fiddling while
Rome burns’.
The party said it was also in the midst of the strike that the First
Lady organised the so-called Peace Rally that brought hundreds of
unsuspecting women to Abuja in what later turned out to be a march of
shame.
The Abuja gathering which featured pop star Iyanya, APC stated, must have guzzled tens of millions of naira.
‘’Yet, some ministers had the temerity to insult the sensibilities of
Nigerians by saying the government will shut down if it meets ASUU’s
demand. What an affront!
“They did not say Nigeria will shut down when the country paid out N3
trillion in non-existent fuel subsidies; they did not say Nigeria will
shut down over the N1 trillion spent in the last eight years on less
than 500 people; they did not say Nigeria will shut down due to FG’s
monumental profligacy, which includes spending billions of naira to
pamper ex-militants, some of whom are now so overfed that they are
threatening the country’s very existence!
‘’It is particularly shocking that the government has carried on as
if everything is normal, without bothering about the fate of the
students who have been marooned at home since the strike started.
“Perhaps this is because the children and wards of those at the helm
of affairs are luxuriating in schools abroad, or because they are too
comfortable to worry about their less-fortunate compatriots,’’ it said.
APC drew attention to the fact that the strike worsened merely two
days after the President instructed his cabinet to do everything
possible within their power to end the strike.
”In fact, the negotiations between ASUU and the Federal Government
were called off two days after the President issued his directive. So
much for credibility!’’ the party said.

Abuja young ladies now turn drivers, power-bikers,ushers and bouncers
The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja is considered one of the fastest growing cities in the world.
This statement has always been justified through the various innovations the city continues to witness even with the influx of different people into the capital city.
Most girls in the FCT are either engaged in Sugar daddy business, executive prostitution or ‘One Chance’.
This, our reporter said was one of the reasons the FCT administration now uses the Military to harass young girls at clubs and on the streets of the capital city. Those who dress transparently or half-Unclad are often used as scapegoats.
However, the trend is changing as some journalists recently ran into some group of young girls who now call themselves protocol 101. These young girls have decided to change the trend, and to use their beauty to add colour to the city that is now considered one of the biggest in the world.
The young ladies who were seen in numbers and beautifully dressed were at various events, adding colour, class, grandeur and ‘swag’ to those events.
Recently at various weddings and major events in Abuja, they were been used as pickups and for personal show-off.
They chauffeur VIPs to events, keep them entertained and run various services for such VIPs; who knows what happens in the dark? It is an all female logistic/service group of young, beautiful ladies, consisting of Drivers, power-bikers, Bouncers, Protocols and Ushers.
This is what one of them said,” So much Millions is spent on the stylish looks of couples during weddings as well as the “interior” decorations of Event Venues, leaving out an equally important component of a successful event, the “exterior”. Your movement in and out of an event should be as celebrated as the other components. We are set to bridge the gap. We are bridge builders. We celebrate the “Exterior/Logistics” of every event. Your “memorable day” is not complete without us.”

Let me go home -Stowaway boy -Edo secures admission for him in top school
The Benin stowaway teenager, Daniel Oikhena, has asked that he be allowed to go home to be with his mother and resume school.
The teenager, who hid in the wheel compartment of an Arik Airline Lagos-bound plane from Benin last month, has been in the custody of the Edo State government since he was brought to Benin last week.
The boy, who mostly gave a yes or no answer from where he is being kept in Benin, however, expressed happiness over the scholarship that was awarded him.
He also said that he did not know that he took a risk when he stowaway, saying that he would not do such again.
“I want to go home,” he said, adding, that he was tired and will be happy to train as an engineer.
Daniel, who said he was terrified when he was arrested on arriving Lagos, said he was not maltreated and was given good food.
Asked if he was questioned in Lagos and Benin, the teenager answered in the affirmative and said he was taken to Benin by road with three armed securitymen.
Meanwhile, the Edo State government has secured admission in one of the state’s top secondary schools for 13-year-old Daniel.
The State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, made this disclosure during the visit of Mr George Uriesi, Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other FAAN management team to him at the Government House, Benin City, yesterday.
According to the governor, “without meaning to encourage anyone else, we decided to support him by sending him to one of the top secondary schools in Edo State that is owned by the government. The reason for opting for a boarding school is that we think that there is need to closely watch him which his parents could not do.
“He is an intelligent young man with uncommon challenges, but one that has a vision. We had him examined by people who should know and the result confirmed that he is normal”, Oshiomhole noted.
“This incident was probably the kind of trigger that we needed to improve the facilities at our airports. You are never going to have all the money you need to do all you have to do. You should start from somewhere,” he noted.
Oshiomhole added “it is also a security issue that we do not have any runway security lights at the Benin Airport. It is a security issue because a plane can take off and it is flying to Benin airspace and it has mechanical faults and it cannot land.
“Politically, there could be an emergency in Edo State and the president needed to visit and he cannot land at the airport at night. You cannot spend the kind of money you are spending on remodeling and the little one you have to do is to ice the cake and you have a complete project. You should take this as something more urgent,” he added.
Earlier, Mr Uriesi said they were in Benin City for ground assessment of the stowaway incident which had forced FAAN to review and improve on its security arrangements.

“I am not bedridden”: Drama in Benin as father of Arik stowaway shows up at Government House
Perhaps not wanting to be left out of his family’s new found fame,
the father of stowaway boy, Daniel Ihekhina, yesterday made a surprising
appearance.
Osaigbovo Ihekhina, who was previously said to be absent because he was ill and hence bedridden, appeared yesterday at the Government House in Benin City, Edo State during a meeting between the Ihekhina family and Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
The appearance of Mr Ihekhina, 44, led to confusion as he explained that contrary to reports that he was sick and bedridden, he was living separately from the family due to a disagreement with his wife.
According to reports, he said his wife refused to stay in the house where he could afford the rent. Therefore, he decided to move out of the house a year ago to where he could afford the rent.
He said: “I decided to come here today (yesterday) to tell the world that I am the father of Daniel. Initially, when I heard the news, I thought my son was kidnapped. But my wife said I should calm down that when everything is okay, she will call me.
“Arising from my loss of job, I decided to move to a new apartment where I can afford the rent and told my wife that they should move in with me, but she refused and continued to stay in the three-bedroom flat on 7, Ehigiagbe Street, Ekenwan, Benin City.”
Mr. Ihekhina who said he resides at Siluko Road, noted: “I usually pay my children’s school fees and provide feeding money regularly, contrary to claims that I abandoned my family.”
He accused the wife of making it look as if he was dead by denying people access to him.
Meanwhile, De RAUFS, a volunteer group which had indicated interest in the welfare of Daniel was at Government House, Benin City. Represented by Yinka Muyiwa, head of legal team, De RAUFS said it came to Edo State to reaffirm the scholarship it earlier gave the lad to continue his education up to university level.

How Spurs chairman Daniel Levy tried to block Ozil’s move to Arsenal
Spanish
newspaper El COnfidencial, has revealed how Tottenham chairman Daniel
Levy, attempted to block Mesut Ozil’s £42.5m move to bitter rivals
Arsenal.
Levy was shocked when he heard that the German playmaker was on his
way to the Emirates, after Madrid told him he was not for sale during
negotiations to sell Gareth Bale. The Spurs chairman felt betrayed and
called Real president Florentino Perez on Monday and tried to block the
move.
Perez is said to have politely told him that the deal was all but done and Ozil would be an Arsenal player.
It is also believed that Levy had delayed Bale move to Real Madrid, so that the Gunners would not get any of Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil or Angel Di Maria.

End of the road: Herbalist, ‘okada’ rider arraigned for kidnapping in Lagos
The end of the road has come for two suspects in
Lagos State as they have been arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Chief
Magistrate Court, Lagos, on a four-count charge of kidnapping, stealing,
and conspiracy.
Okula Bamiwola, a 32 year old herbalist and
Whenayon Kikisuhu, 28, an “okada” rider, resident in Tande area of
Ajara, Badagry, Lagos, and Idojori, Ago-Shasha, in Ipokia Local
Government Area, Ogun State respectively, were charged by the State
Criminal Investigations Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.
According to reports,
the suspects allegedly committed the offence in question on July 16,
2013, at about 2pm in Badagry, when one Timothy Wuse, 27, was contacted
by the accused persons for hiring of his motorcycle. The story took a
different dimension when Wuse’s whereabouts could not be ascertained
after the deal.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Clement
Okuoimose, the accused persons are also facing charges relating to
witchcraft and juju, adding “when Wuse and his motorcycle could not be
seen or traced, leading to the notion that the two accused persons might
have kidnapped him, the case was reported to the police at Badagry
division, before it was transferred to SCID for investigation.”
The prosecutor said the alleged offences committed
by the two accused persons contravened Sections 130, 269, 285 and 409 of
the Criminal Law of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011. However, when the
plea of the accused persons was taken, they pleaded not guilty to all
the offenses. The presiding magistrate, Mr. O. O. Olatunji, subsequently
granted them bail in the sum of N100, 000, with two sureties in the
same like sum.
The matter was adjourned till September 25, for mention.
JTF destroys 2 illegal refineries in Bayelsa
The war against illegal refining of crude oil is heating up as the Niger Delta section of the Joint Task Force has said that it has destroyed two illegal oil refineries in Bayelsa State.
The JTF issued this statement through its spokesman, Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, who said that men of the 5 Battalion of the task force assigned to the Sector 2 area of the Niger Delta seized two vessels laden with illegally sourced crude oil along the Kasabobo creek.
Nwachukwu reportedly said the feat was achieved after a week long intensive anti-oil theft patrol targeted at sanitizing the creeks and waterways of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa. This came even as the Bayelsa State Government said the Governor Seriake Dickson administration would rid the state of kidnapping, pipeline vandalism and other crimes.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Lt.Col. Bernard Kenebai (retd.), spoke on behalf of the government in an interview on Tuesday.
“In Bayelsa, the criminals will have to make a personal decision not to be involved in kidnapping, pipeline vandalism and other crimes. Our mandate and commitment is to ensure that we rid Bayelsa of criminals.
“We earnestly must empower security agencies and position them to be able to carry out their statutory responsibilities in such a way that meets the expectations of the citizens.”
Speaking on the impounded oil barges, the JTF spokesman said the Commander, Sector 2, Brig.-Gen. Osasogie Uzamere, ordered the operation following reports that crude oil theft had continued despite JTF’s continuous clampdown on the activities of criminals.
Nwachukwu said, “The troops were ordered by the Commander, Sector 2 Brig.-Gen. Osasogie Uzamere, to embark on the operation following reports of recalcitrance of oil thieves in the area despite regular clampdown by the JTF.
“The barges, christened CWTC 16 and TIKORO 2 with eight compartments each, filled with stolen crude were intercepted by the troops while trying to make its way into the international waters through Forupa channels.”
“The troops also carried out raids on illegal crude oil distillers along Ogbenibiri, Kugbie and Forupa in Southern Ijaw LG where they dismantled eight illegal crude oil distillation sites.
“The troops also scuttled 7 steel reservoirs deceptively buried in the ground and concealed with canopies to prevent detection by troops.”
In a separate operation, Nwachukwu said the anti-oil theft patrol team of 146 Battalion carrying out surveillance along PPMC right-of-way arrested 4 suspects at an active illegal crude oil distillation site at George Kiri near Bonny Island.
He said 21 drums containing illegally distilled Automated Gas Oil loaded in four 75HP OBM speed boat were recovered from the suspects.
He said, “A cordon and search conducted around the illegal refinery site led to the discovery of a metal pipe connection welded on PPMC pipeline which would require the assistance of a technician to be disconnected. The suspects recovered items have been taken into custody pending further investigation.”
Finally 8 PDP Governors Set To Dump Party; See Their Names
Once this happens, PDP will have only 15 states, while opposition will have 21 states.
As political calculations towards the 2015 elections heighten, it has emerged that at least eight PDP governors are set to leave the party. Their move is not longer a question of "if" but of "when", said a senior political actor familiar with the development. The eight influential governors are:
Rivers (Rotimi Amaechi), Adamawa (Murtala Nyako), Kano (Rabiu Kwankwaso), Jigawa (Sule Lamido) and Kebbi (Seidu Dakingari). Others are Governors Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto and Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara.
To underscore the frustrations of the group with PDP, three of the Governors: Lamido, Kwankwaso and Wamakko boycotted the PDP peace parley in Kaduna on Saturday, which had Vice-President Namadi Sambo in attendance.
According to Thisday, the eight governors are firmly resolved to work together politically, claiming that they have been "thoroughly marginalised in PDP" and have lost confidence in the party leadership, which they say has been totally "commandeered" by President Goodluck Jonathan and the Aso Rock agents.
The governors, according to sources, have come to the conclusion that their political fortunes can only dwindle in PDP and as such are weighing their strategic options and next political moves having reached some political "agreement-in-principle" with the Bola Tinubu and Muhammadu Buhari - led opposition merger group, All Progressives Congress (APC).
Olufamous.com also gathered from a credible source that the governors are already working out strategy to move with all the Senators, House of Representatives, State Assembly members and local council chairmen in their states into the APC to defeat the PDP in 2015.

Pastor rapes woman in church during ‘spiritual bath’
ABEOKUTA — A 46-year-old Pastor, Olamide Sobowale, of Glory Church of
Christ Aladura, Oke-Itoku, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has been ordered to
be remanded in prison for allegedly raping a woman while bathing in his
church backyard.
Pastor Sobowale, who was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, yesterday, was accused of raping one Dupe Makinde, 30, who lives in Isaje, Abeokuta, while taking a spiritual bath allegedly recommended by the pastor.

Sad news: 6 people killed by unknown gunmen in Plateau
Five members of a family have been killed by unknown gunmen in Jos, Plateau State.
The assailants, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, shot the five individuals on Sunday night in Kungte village, Kanadap, in the Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area of the state. One Peter Dung, his wife and three children were identified as the victims.
According to reports, the gunmen also killed another person whose identity is yet to be determined. Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Yiljap Abraham, who confirmed the killings, described the incident as “inhuman and utter display of insensitivity to the sanctity of lives.”
Spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Felicia Anselm, also confirmed the incident. Anselm said the police had been working round the clock to apprehend the killers. She said no suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident, adding that the remains of the victims had been deposited in the mortuary.
Reacting on behalf of the state government, Abraham, in a statement, said, “The unprovoked killing of six members of two families in their home in Kungte village, Kanadap (near Marraraban Jama’a) in Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area by gunmen on Sunday, September, 1, 2013, is an evil and wicked act that should be condemned by all members of society.
“The killing is also a display of cowardice by the perpetrators who under the cover of darkness deliberately chose to visit violence on vulnerable members of society, women and children, to achieve clearly devilish designs.
“Such an attack, coming at a time when the state has been mostly peaceful for quite some time appears a desperate attempt to reverse the gains of our hard-earned efforts in breaking down the barriers of ethnic and religious intolerance and thereby rebuilding the bridges of communal consensus.
“Such intentions will fail because Plateau people have made up their minds to live in peace with one another and, together with the state government and security agencies, they will frustrate every attempt aimed at taking the state back to the days of bloodshed and gloom. The current level of peace in the state is for consolidation, not evaporation”
The Sunday killing occurred less than a fortnight after 10 people were killed in similar fashion in Foron district of Barkin Ladi thus raising fears of resurgence of killings in Plateau after months of peace.
The Kungte murder also came barely 24 hours after the redeployment of the Commander of the Special Task Force, Maj. Gen. Henry Ayoola.

Open Letter to ASUU: Have Pity On Poor Students By Yushau A. Shuaib
This missive is to appeal to members of Academic Staffs Union of
Universities (ASUU), individually and collectively to consider the
plight of innocent students and their helpless parents and return to
work.
Since July 2nd, 2013 when they declared a “total and indefinite strike” over issues they claim have remained unresolved pertaining to 2009 agreement, innocent students and their poor parents have been at the receiving end of the stalemate.
While some government officials are lousy and combatant in their approach to resolving the faceoff over the strike, it is difficult to fault their arguments and the statistics they reel out over the level of government’s intervention and implementation of the contentious 2009 agreement.
It is therefore a welcome development the recent disbursement of N100 billion by the government for the implementation of the first phase projects listed in the Needs Assessment Report of Universities and another N30 billion to support Federal university Councils in the payment of arrears of Earned Allowances to deserving staff.
As I wrote in an article on the problems of public and private universities in Nigeria in October 2011, the deregulation of education in Nigeria is a deliberate effort to break government’s monopoly on education and by allowing the establishment of private universities to check the incessant strikes by lecturers in public institutions.
I then pointed out that that most of the current leaders attended public universities that were well-funded. Our leaders, including some of the current activist-lecturers enjoyed scholarships and crisis-free academic sessions which unfortunately, the current students could not enjoy.
While we accuse political leaders of selfishness, there is no difference between them with some of the lecturers in their seeming connivance in the promotion of private universities and patronage of foreign institutions, to the expense of our public universities.
It is regrettable that while attempting to register their grievances against inadequate funding from the government, ASUU members take some actions that are inimical to the progress and development of their poor students. Yet, the flexibility of academic environment with job security and huge severance packages influence the decision of many lecturers to remain on the payroll of public universities. We are also aware that some of the lecturers provide part-time lecturing to the private universities in the name of private practice (PP), while others would rather lobby or take political appointments and consultancy jobs than attend to the needs of their students. Surprisingly too, some professors are yet to adapt to the new use of information technology. They still rely on old books and theories of past centuries when the internet provides the theory of reality and practicability.
We must also blame ASUU for indiscipline and lack of adequate inspection on the campuses which have caused cultism, drug addiction, gang rape and other criminalities on campuses. For instance, the incessant ASUU strikes influence idle students to engage in prostitution, robbery and kidnapping to earn a living and to occupy their times. It is therefore not surprising that some of the institutions are alleged to churn out certificated illiterates who can barely write their names and place of origin.
Not every parent can afford or willing to send their children to expensive private universities that widen the social gap between the rich and the poor. The private institutions, too have their weaknesses with some of them operating medieval laws that weaken independence and freedom of expression on the campuses. Like regimented garrisons where all forms of feudal measures are taken, the private institutions do not treat their students as adults but pupils in boarding schools who must observe strict wake-up time and bedtime light-out.
The option of missionary universities also have some challenges. Instead of making the fees affordable, some of them develop unwritten house-rules that 'no student will ever fail to graduate because of spiritual interventions.’ Apart from discriminatory policies against those that do not believe or practice their faiths, some of them conduct virginity tests on students upon resumption. While worshippers, occasionally act as part time lecturers, whose allowances could be paid ‘only in heaven,’ some of the recruited scholars are actually lecturers from established public universities within their vicinities.
We know that we have crises in our hands and it seems the government with recent moves have demonstrated willingness to resolve the crisis. After a recent meeting of key government officials with Vice-Chancellors and Chairmen of Councils of Public Universities, it was disclosed that the government had implemented some of the agreements it entered with the academic staff. These include implementations of the Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics and non-teaching staff; National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for staff of universities; Amendment of Pensionable Retirement Age of Academics in the Professorial cadre as Professors and Readers now retire at 70 years while others now retire at 65 instead of 60 years.
Government has also provided a counterpart funding of N250 million to help ASUU meet up with the mandatory deposit required for registration of Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO) while it continues to assist state universities through the Federal intervention agencies.
There should be a way to resolve demands pertaining to commercial ventures, especially the alleged request by ASUU for the transfer of government landed properties to universities, which government resists because ASUU has no structure to manage or maintain such property.
While we must call on our policy makers to ensure that our universities are adequately funded, our lawmakers should enact laws that would compel lecturers to be responsible to their duties and concentrate on the job for which they are discriminatorily remunerated. The law should also compel public officers to send their children to public institutions where they can relate and compete with other poor students.
Regulatory bodies such as NUC, JAMB, NECO and WAEC should be more proactive and responsive in monitoring responsibilities so as to ensure that Nigerian universities comply with international best practices.

Drama as girl, 14, gives birth to TRIPLETS, 16-year-old boyfriend flees (PICTURED)
A teenager has given birth to triplets in Bungoma County.
Fourteen-year-old Mwanaharabu Wamukoya of Harambee village in
Kakamega County was admitted to Bungoma District Hospital on Saturday
evening and had a Caesarean Section on Sunday to deliver the three baby
boys.
Two of the new-borns weighed 1.5 kilogrammes while the third one weighed 1.3 kilogrammes.
Nursing officer-in-charge Mary Marumbu said the babies and their mother were in stable condition and ready to be discharged.
The father of the babies, a 16-year-old boy, is said to have taken
off on learning that the girl had given birth to triplets. The teen is
also a school dropout and does menial jobs. The arrival of the triplets
is said to have distressed him.
“He has no ability to take care of the babies even if he was here. We
are grateful to the government for scrapping off maternity fees because
I will be free to go home once discharged. I would have been detained
here if I had been asked to pay,” the teenage mother said.
Health practitioners in the county have expressed concern over the increasing rates of teenage pregnancies.Wow! She looks awesome: Davido’s sister, Sharon Adeleke stuns in ADORABLE wedding dress + D’banj, MayD, others rock Miami (PHOTOS)
