Terrible: Woman arrested for strangling her son and dumping him in a river

A woman who brought a child into the world allegedly decided to take it out again after only 2 days of it being born.

The 23 year old mother was arrested by operatives of the Benue State Police Command after it was revealed that she had allegedly killed her newborn son.

The suspect, Joy Iember Iorzua, is reported to have strangled the baby and dumped his body in River Ujiiragbo, in the Gwer Local Government Area of the state.

Vanguard reports:

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the suspect was arrested at Mbasa-Mbakine Gee council ward by members of the vigilante group operating in the community who handed her over to the Police in Aliade, the local government headquarters.

According to our source, the suspect who lived along Ayua-Num street, in Aliade town, was delivered of the baby a week ago and two days later, she allegedly strangled the innocent baby to death.

”After killing the baby, she wrapped his remains in a polythene bag, put him in a carton and dumped it at the popular UjiiragboRiver.

”The dastardly killing was however exposed when members of the vigilante group on patrol in the area, got wind of her action and her intention to escape from the community for fear of being apprehended.

”They trailed and arrested her after which angry members of her community descended heavily on her before handing her over to the Police at Aliade.
”The truth is that this is not the first time this type of allegation is being leveled against her, and that was what prompted the angry reaction of the people who were outraged by her action”.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, for Aliade, Suprintendent of Police Bitrus Madani who confirmed the arrest, disclosed however that the suspect had been transferred to the state command headquarters for further interrogation.

Madani who expressed dismay at the increasing crime wave in the local government area vowed that the Police would not relent in its task of ensuring the safety of lives and property of the people in the area.

ASUU strike: FG is a failure – Union vows to continue protest

By Ameh Comrade Godwin on October 9, 2013

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has declared that it has lost confidence in the ability of the Federal Government to resolve the ongoing face-off between its body and the Federal government.

ASUU Chairman, Comrade Anthony Monye-Emina who stated this in a brief chat with journalist at the University of Benin vowed that the Union must continue with the strike to achieve its desired purpose.

He said the Union had lost faith in the Federal Government, having failed to remain committed to the terms of the agreement it entered into with the government as far back as 1999.

According to him, one of the reasons they are insisting that their demands must be met is because the government initially denied the existence of the 2009 agreement which was signed by its officials.

“We can no longer trust government; we have lost faith in its willingness to deliver on the issues that led to the strike in the first place,” he said.

Speaking further, Emina called on the Federal Government to find a permanent solution to the impasse so students could return to school.

North will survive if Nigeria breaks up, says Aliyu

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu said yesterday that the North will survive in case of a breakup of the country.
The region, he declared, is not afraid of being on its own as he warned against statements that suggest that the country is heading for a breakup.
“If Nigeria splits, the north can still survive on its own contrary to the belief of some people in other regions that the north cannot survive if the nation disintegrates,” the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), stated yesterday.
He spoke during a meeting in Minna with members of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) in his office.
Aliyu cited some countries in Africa that had disintegrated in recent past, noting that such countries have not gone into extinction rather they have survived and are waxing stronger.
“No community in Nigeria should be afraid of separation. If some people want to go, they should go, we will survive. We are not scared of separation,” he said
“The same was said of Niger Republic. Niger was the poorest country in the world but today, if you see oil in Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto and Maiduguri, it would have come from Niger Republic.
“There is no way Niger and Chad can have oil and improve their economy and the north will not be able to do the same”, Aliyu boasted.
Although he did not say so, it was believed that Aliyu was responding to threats by ex-militant and Southsouth leader, Alhaji Asari Dokubo that the nation would disintegrate in 2015 if President Goodluck Jonathan is not re-elected.

Hunter hunted? Policeman gets beaten up by motorcyclists for confiscating a bike in Lagos

A police officer in Lagos State has suffered in the line of duty after he was mobbed and severely beaten for seizing a motorcycle.

The incident occurred around the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, at the Berger Yard environs yesterday evening.

The irate motorcyclists reportedly beat up the policeman all the while calling him a thief because he had confiscated a motorcycle from one of their own.

Chuddy101 reports:

The  policeman was attacked on Monday evening, by some men suspected to be commercial cyclists (Okada).

He allegedly seized a motorcycle belonging to one of them.

It was gathered that the unsuspecting Policeman, whose identity could not be established at press time, was taking the seized motorcycle away when he was intercepted at Berger Yard Bus Stop by the mob.

An eyewitness said the mob was made up of Okada men of Northern extraction.

Before help could come the officer’s way, the mob descended on him and beat him up, while shouting Ole, Ole (thief, thief), and hit him on the head with a sharp objects.

Before people realised he was actually a police officer and had seized the bike, the mob had retrieved the motorcycle and made away with it

Boy, 9, sneaks onto flight to Las vegas unnoticed and without ticket

A flight to America’s so-called adult playground, Las Vegas, had an unusual passenger last week: a 9-year-old boy, traveling alone and apparently without a boarding pass.

Officials are trying to figure out how he got through security — let alone on the flight.

The Transportation Security Administration is investigating.

Patrick Hogan, a spokesman for Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport, said that during the flight, the crew “became suspicious of the child’s circumstances.”

They then got in touch with authorities and turned the boy over to Child Protective Services in Nevada, Hogan said in a statement.

“Fortunately, the flight crew took appropriate actions to ensure the child’s safety, so the story does have a good ending,” he said.

Delta said it takes “the incident very seriously and working with authorities.”

The boy traveled Thursday on flight 1651, a 757 from Minneapolis to Las Vegas.

The airline spells out its policy on children flying solo plainly on their website.

Kids between the ages of 5 and 14 may travel alone as part of the unaccompanied minor program. Someone from Delta pays special attention to the children, walks them on board, shows them their seats and even introduces them to the cockpit crew, time permitting, Delta says, adding, “kids love this part.”

Airport officials reviewed security footage and don’t think the child had a ticket, CNN affiliate KARE reported.

The boy spent a good amount of time at the airport before boarding the plane, KARE said.

He was there the day before, the station reported, citing airport officials. He passed his time by taking luggage from a carousel, bringing it to an airport eatery and then ditching it, asking a server to watch the bag “while he went to the restroom.”

Yet the potential red flags of a nine-year-old, traveling alone and leaving unattended luggage failed to trigger any action.

The following day the child took the train to the airport, cleared security and nearly made it to Las Vegas without detection.

“Obviously, the fact that the child’s actions weren’t detected until he was in flight is concerning,” Hogan wrote. Still 33 million people travel through Minneapolis’ airport every year, he noted. “I don’t know of another instance in my 13 years at the airport in which anything similar has happened,” he said

Guidelines on making good investment decisions

Running a successful business means having to make tough financial decisions. ADEMOLA ALAWIYE highlights some guidelines to be considered in making such decisions.

Sometimes it’s hard to predict the outcome of your decisions, more so if you don’t have a great deal of experience in that particular area. Although it is practically impossible for one to be 100 per cent infallible in predicting a good or bad investment, it is possible to narrow down the playing field by following basic principles while investing.

Experts note that this will help beginning or advanced investors to ensure a margin of error when investing their funds for a good return earning. It is therefore important for an investor to adopt the basic principles of making good investment decisions if he wishes to trim his risks and make considerable progress in his venture.

Business professionals say whether it is cheap insurance, good insurance or just plain savings bonds, in today’s unstable economy, one cannot ever be 100 per cent certain in investing. They, however, note that choosing wisely will definitely be an asset in achieving success or avoiding financial disaster and cutting risks. Below are simple tips to making excellent investment decisions in an unstable economy.

Take enough time to think

At the moment, Nigeria’s economy is unstable and harsh to businesses. Businessmen, in separate interviews, often complain of the unfriendly economic policies which they have to contend with in order to survive. As a result, they note that whoever wishes to invest in Nigeria must take enough time to think through what venture he plans to dabble into.

Investing in one’s future is definitely not something to just plunge into without a careful thought and consideration. Experts say the lightening-fast nature of the Internet is conducive and geared towards convincing surfers to make quick and impetuous decisions. Consequently, this fact needs to be on one’s mind continuously before making any investment decision as any error might be regretted. Of course, no one loves to regret in business.

How much risk can you take?

You should know how much risk you are willing to tolerate in whatever business you do. Knowing the difference between an average savings/money market account and investment vehicles which form part of a portfolio is vitally important when making successful investment decisions, experts say. So, as an investor, are you ready to take risks? The Managing Director, Silex Limited, Mr. Steve Obong, says that calculated risks should be taken in business to succeed. According to him, every form of investment has its associated risks, and any investor should be ready to undertake such risks, but shrewdly.

Never give up easily

Do not succumb to pressure in business. You must understand that every business has its own pressure and it is not wise to give up easily after encountering some challenges.

Generally, families, friends and the shoe-shine boy on the street will all offer financial advice. Most of it will not be qualified, expert advice. Most of them will know of a cheap insurance policy, promising stock or a well-performing company that has good future potential. Whatever they may advise or try to push, in order to avoid bad investments, it is crucial for a person not to succumb to outside pressure. Put in your best and be wise.

Undertake detailed research before investing

Experts advise that in today’s highly volatile economic environment, it is necessary to carefully research into a particular financial vehicle which carries out one’s financial goals the most. Meticulously checking out the specific investment offers, competitive offers from other sources and how well the investment is performing is a crucial prerequisite. You should ensure a detailed research before investing in any form of venture.

Also important is to painstakingly research the reputation, integrity and track record of the financial institution offering the investment. Experts say this is just as important as the investment itself. Some of the basic tips for this include taking the time to implement a savings and/or an investment plan with a diversified portfolio; determining how much risk one is willing to assume: research which investments are insured, non-secured and/or low-risk; and never bow to friendly advice if it does not adhere to your short, medium or long-range goals.

Are you adventurous?

The Managing Consultant, Beatrex Consultants, Mrs. Beatrice Okolie, says many of our entrepreneurs want to sit in a place and expect things to work out fine. She notes that you must have a dream and that dream must influence your entrepreneurial vision. She says, “The moment you have that dream, you should understand that it doesn’t come easy, you must drive it. What do I mean by driving it? It is not going to be easy. So, how do you as an entrepreneur identify your priority? Even in the face of making it, when the returns begin to come in, how do you determine your priority? Do you forget where you are coming from? What informs your taste? You have to be adventurous. When people talk of lack of funds, I laugh. You see, when you talk of lack of funds, I see it as the least of all your problems. The idea that you want to develop as an entrepreneur is key and paramount.”

She explains that one needs to diagnose the efficacy, relevance, workability and feasibility of one’s idea. She states that these are the issues that many entrepreneurs tend to push aside and they begin to talk about the issue of funds. “People talk about issues of policy and infrastructure, but these are only essential and secondary, they are not primary,” she adds. She notes that as an entrepreneur, one must have the drive and understand one’s dream and idea.

She says, “Why are you in this business? Can you explain or is it because your brother, sister, or uncle is doing it? No! If you go into business because of that, you have messed up everything and your problem starts from there. So, when you have gotten your idea right, you can now talk of money or funding.”

‘Solidarity forever’ – NUPENG accuses government of being insensitive to ASUU, gears up for solidarity strike

The wave of strikes that has hit the country might just assume tidal status as yet another organization has disclosed its plans to embark on an industrial action.

In solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has said that it will embark on a strike of its own in support of the university body unless the Federal Government fulfills its part of the agreement that was signed by both parties.

NUPENG, through its National President Igwe Achese, said that the FG was unperturbed by the situation because none of the leaders’ children was attending any of the affected schools.

Chuddy101 presenter report that:

NUPENG President, Igwe Achese, while speaking at the Union’s National Administrative Council, NAC, meeting, in Lagos, expressed worry over the state of Nigerian universities.

He said government’s failure to respect agreements had resulted to strikes in different sectors of the Nigerian system since the inception of 2013.

He said, “We appeal to government to implement agreement reached with ASUU so that students can go back to school. If the crisis in the sector is not resolved, we will soon direct our members to embark on solidarity strike.”

Blaming the Ministry of Labour over the ongoing saga, he said, “The Ministry of Labour needs to be proactive if we must get these issues nipped in the bud. The ministry also needs to make sure that agreements reached or communiqué signed are implemented.

“The Ministry has a big role to play to avert strikes in the country. When unions begin to lose faith in the ministry that is when we have this kind of crisis. The Labour mMinister should be firm in making sure that the right decisions are taken.

“As it is now, every activity in the Ministry of Labour is in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, which ought not to be so. The role of the SGF should be to intervene only when the need arises.”

Drama as reptile enters femi kuti’s car on lagos third mainland bridge

Drama ensued at the third mainland bridge over the weekend when a crowd gathered around the car of legendary Afrobeat King, Femi Kuti, to locate a Lizard that almost caused him an accident.

Narrating his ordeal, Kuti, who arrived late to the MUSON Center, where he was a guest artiste at the pre-event press briefing on the coming MUSON anniversary concert, described the experience as horrifying.

He said the lizard appeared all of a sudden, from the dashboard of the car, while he was at top speed, starring at him snappily before ducking away..

“You know, it could have been a disaster if the lizard had run through my trousers, climbing to my private part. You can imagine how jumpy I could have reacted, trying to protect my manhood. Because, that to me is an important part of who I am, I can’t joke with it. Evil people could be at work,” added the musician jocularly, still wondering how the lizard got into his car.”

After the event, Femi insisted he will not drive the jeep till the Lizard was found!

#LagosPlaneCrash: Meet the Man who walked out of the remains without sustaining any injuries (PHOTO)

Akinsanya, along with his brother in-law, Mr. Feyi Agagu, the late Agagu’s son, were the only family members of the late governor on board the ill-fated plane.
As the aircraft crashed, Akinsanya, a Lagos businessman, was seen walking out of the wreckage before the aircraft caught fire.
As he walked away, apparently conscious, Air Force men who were among the first set of rescuers at the site, stopped him.
They assisted him to stop the flow of blood on his head.
The eye witness said: “I saw one man walk out on his legs. I think he is the only one that walked out.”
It was gathered that Akinsanya broke the news of the crash to the burial party waiting at the Akure airport to receive the body of the former governor, which was to lie in-state in the Ondo State capital yesterday.
He reportedly spoke to Mr. Femi Agagu, the late former governor’s younger brother, who broke the news to Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who was leading the burial party.
The airline, in a statement, expressed deep regrets and “with all submission to the will of the Almighty” confirmed the “unfortunate accident of one of our aircraft”.
The statement added: “The aircraft was chartered for a flight to Akure on the 3rd of October, 2013. “We are currently cooperating fully with the aviation regulatory authorities with a view to establishing the remote and immediate causes of this most regrettable and unfortunate accident. “Our prayers go to the affected families of the departed. We pray for their souls to rest in peace while we continue to wish and pray for the speedy and full recovery of the survivors of this grave and sad accident.”

Agagu’s burial to hold today despite plane crash

Despite the crash involving the aircraft conveying his remains to Akure, Ondo State, the burial of former Governor of the state, Olusegun Agagu will reportedly still hold today.
According to reports, the casket containing the late governor’s body came out of the plane’s debris without a scratch. The family has thus decided to go ahead with the planned funeral.
The Ondo State Chapter of the PDP, through its Chairman,
Ebenezer Alabi, said: “We just consulted with the family and have decided to go ahead with the burial.
“More so, the son of the former governor survived and the son-in-law survived. There was no scratch on the casket.
“So while the family sympathised with those that lost their lives and their loved ones, they have decided to go ahead with the burial as was initially planned.”
Vanguard reports:
Also, the body of the former governor, which was still intact despite the plane crash, is in transit to Iju-Odo, his country home and final place of rest.
It was gathered that the family of late Agagu in Iju-Odo had ordered that his remains be conveyed to his home town, yesterday, by road to continue with the burial arrangement.
A dependable family source said that the burial will now be done without the usual pomp and pageantry.
This is coming after the death of 11 persons, including a Commissioner in the state, Deji Falae, top government officials and the crew.
It was gathered that the wife of the former governor insisted that burial arrangements of her late husband will take place as earlier scheduled. A family source said Mrs Agagu insisted that burial plans should go ahead after she confirmed and spoke with her son (Feyi) and son in-law, who were involved in the crash.
The Christian wake-keep was held as scheduled, yesterday, while the body will be interred today.
A member of the burial committee, who confirmed the decision of the Agagu family to go ahead with the burial despite the air mishap, however, expressed concerns over the plan.
Speaking with Vanguard in confidence, the member said that the burial ought to have been shifted at least for one week in honour of those that died in the crash.

Area Boys Fight Over Money Found on Lagos Plane Crash Victims

Some hoodlums on Thursday were seen exchanging blows and throwing bottles at one another over the money they found on the dead victims of the Associated Airline plane crash. The hoodlums had turned the road leading to the crash site to a boxing ground. It was learnt that when the hoodlums were assisting in the evacuation of the victims, they allegedly searched the victims’ pockets for money and other valuable things. It was also learnt that they fight ensued due to alleged ‘insincerity’ in the sharing of the money they stole from the dead. One of the hoodlums, identified simply as Loko, was heard saying, “You won’t believe that after the whole rescue thing, we luckily found money and they don’t want to share it equally.”   area boys doing what they know best.....hahahahahas

Northern Governors Will Not Support A Sovereign National Conference – Aliyu

By Nma Shekwolo
Chairman of the Northern States Governor’s Forum, NSGF, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has said that the region will not support calls for a Sovereign National Conference, arguing that such a demand will mean that all elected politicians give up their positions as “you cannot have two sovereignty in one state”.
On the other hand, the Afenifere renewal group (the pan-Yoruba Socio-political group) backs a Sovereign National Conference, saying, “what this nation needs is a fundamental political reform that will overhaul the present bloated governance structure. And we believe such fundamental reform can only come about through an instrument of a Sovereign National Conference”.
Speaking at the opening of a one day workshop organised by the Niger state Ministry of Tertiary Education for Niger state students, Aliyu said that those calling for a sovereign national conference must understand its implication.
“If anybody says he is going to organise a sovereign National Conference all of us in government must resign our jobs and then transfer the sovereignty of the country to a committee that is going to discuss the sovereignty of the country,” he said.
The governor however added that the forum would approve a national conference which in his view will move the country forward.
His words: “I will love a National Conference that will look at our constitution and really give us justice, equity and fairness in our body politics and in our national life.”
He said contrary to popular views, the Northern states are not afraid of organising a conference as it will promote constructive deliberations that will lead to the progress and development of the country.
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday renewed calls for a National Conference.
“A conference of Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities, called to foster frank and open discussions of the national question, can certainly find accommodation in the extant provisions of the 1999 Constitution which guarantee freedom of expression, and of association,” Senate President David Mark said.
While noting that it is welcome development, Mark said nonetheless that the idea of a National Conference is not without inherent and fundamental difficulties.
“Problems of its structure and composition will stretch the letters and spirit of the Constitution and severely task the ingenuity of our constitutionalists,” he stated.

Polytechnic lecturers resume nationwide strike today

There seems to be no end in sight for the crisis currently rocking Nigeria’s education sector as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has today joined university lecturers in the ongoing strike.
ASUP national president, Comrade Chibuzor Asomugha confirmed that the union was going on with the strike and it is a total strike.
It would be recalled that the union had in July suspended its nationwide strike following the level of progress made in negotiation with government and the intervention of the Joint Senate and House of Representative Committee on Education.
However, following government’s inability to meet the condition for the suspension of the strike, the union had last weekend threatened to resume the suspended strike today.
ASUP has described the government’s refusal to fulfill any of the promises and agreements reached with the Union before the suspension of the strike on July 17 as frustrating.
The union also passed a vote of no confidence on the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), owing to its inability to meet the needs and demands of polytechnic education.

How we robbed Pasuma of his Range sport & shared the money – Robber confesses

The suspects  identified as Fatai Balogun, Wale Akinjobi and Gbenga Kolawole during interrogation, confessed to have come all the way from Ogun state to operate.
A source, who craved anonymity  told Crime Alert that the police launched a manhunt for the gang after  Pasuma’s encounter, during which  they were  intercepted.
The gang, as gathered, also attacked a wealthy man in Iju Ishaga area of Lagos, where they robbed him of N500,000, his mobile phones and other valuables. After the operation, one of them, Wale who resides around the area reportedly dug a hole at the back of his compound where he buried his weapon.
But unknown to him, a resident said to have sighted him,  alerted the police who quickly arrested him and transferred him to the SARS.During interrogation, Wale reportedly confessed that his gang robbed Pasuma of his Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicle, SUV, and an unspecified amount of  money, four months ago in Lagos. His confessional statement, as gathered, led to the arrest of other suspected members.
Fatai Balogun, told  Crime Alert that leader of the gang, Ade, got the highest share from Pasuma’s loot.

“He was the one who searched Pasuma and collected money from him. But  nobody knew the amount he got. Few days later, he bought a Toyota Camry car with the loot but gave us  peanuts.   I have gone on several operations with Ade. One of them was at Ajah area where we snatched a car at gun point along Epe road. We did that operation with Ade’s car but we had a little problem on the road after Ade ran into a ditch. We had to  abandon the car when policemen came looking for us but Ade later sent a towing vehicle to retrieve the car.

Wale  brought the job that landed  me in trouble. He told me  there was a  rich man who lives in his area, that  he would want me to follow him execute the job because he does not have the expertise to do it. I accepted because the job was an easy one, as there won’t  be much huddles  getting inside. We were three in number that went for the operation.
I took N120,000 and gave Wale and Gbenga their  share. I sold the laptops  we took from the man for N40,000 each and at the end, I relocated to my base in Abeokuta, Ogun State.  I don’t know how Wale mishandled  the gun he used for the operation, which led to his being sighted by one of his neighbors,”he stated

ASUU strike: Students to stage Independence Day protests

Following the more than 3-month old academic strike undertaken by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and indications that same is not nearing its end, Nigerian students have decided to embark on a protest.

The protest is slated to hold today, the 1st of October, as the country marks its 53rd year of Independence.

According to reports, the students are mobilizing to protest the insensitivity of the government to the plight of lecturers at various universities in the country.

It was gathered from sources at the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) that students at various zones of the association would demonstrate against continued closure of universities throughout the country.

In Ibadan, Oyo State, the “Zone D” leaders of NANS told reporters that it is prepared to demonstrate on October 1st. The students said they would march from the Mokola roundabout in Ibadan, starting from 8am.

Also in Lagos, the Joint Campus Committee of NANS Lagos said the students are being mobilized to begin their protest march from the NLC building in Yaba area of Lagos.

The students insist that demands of their lecturers are reasonable and must be met by the Nigerian government.

University lecturers have been on strike since 1st of July, 2013 over President Goodluck Jonathan’s government’s failure to honor the agreements signed with them since 2009.

The university teachers had vowed that their strike will continue indefinitely will continue until the government honor 2009 agreements to revitalize the public education.
